When purchasing a new window or door, please consider the following:

1. The Window Wise Program

Northern Comfort Windows & Doors Ltd. is a Window Wise Contractor, which means:

1.      We have been in business longer than 8 years

2.      We have a good reputation and financial stability

3.      We adhere to the SAWDAC code of ethics (for information on SAWDAC, refer to our Professional Affiliations page)

4.      We offer a minimum 5-year workmanship guarantee

5.      We carry two million dollars in liability insurance

6.      We ensure that each of our installers has successfully completed the mandatory installation training program and are certified by Window Wise.

2.     Energy saving features of efficient windows

ü       Double paned - double paned windows create an air space between the panes of glass that acts as an insulator. Double paned windows are better than single paned windows because they reduce air convection (movement of air caused by differences in temperature). A thicker air space insulates better than a thin one, but increasing the air space beyond 1/2 inch provides no further gain in energy performance and convection loops might occur.

ü       Low-conductivity gas fill - By substituting the air between the panes of glass for another gas such as argon, heat loss can be greatly reduced. Argon is a denser gas that has lower conductivity than air. This means that the argon gas fill allows less heat to be transferred. It also prevents convection loops from forming because argon requires more energy to heat it and make it rise.

ü       Low-Emissivity coating - Low-E means lower heat exchange! Low-E glazing allows visible light to pass through but reflects infrared heat radiation back into the house. This means a warmer house in the winter and a cooler house in the summer.

ü       Low-conductivity warm edge spacers - The material on the edge moves the heat!   The edge spacer provides an air seal and holds the two panes of glass apart. Ask for warm edge spacers when buying new windows.

ü       Low-conductivity frames - The choice of window frame material plays a large role in the energy performance of your windows. Choose a material with low conductivity. Low conductivity materials are essential when it comes to keeping heat in. Vinyl is an excellent choice for frame material.

Remember, A Window Wise installation automatically includes all of the above features!!!

3.     Consumer Information

Although appearance, cost and resilience are important considerations, please ensure that you select a high-performance window that meets CSA standards and has a good ER number.  This quality of window will also tend to be better designed and manufactured and will offer better resistance to condensation.

What you should know:

ü       CSA certification eliminates companies that produce inferior products.

ü       CSA inspects our  supplier’s plants regularly to ensure compliance to certification.

ü       All our windows are CSA Certified - Above minimum requirements.

4.     Quality of Products

By selecting the right window and door designs, you will have considerable energy savings and carefree maintenance for years to come.  We assure you that all products used by Northern Comfort Windows & Doors Ltd. meet the criteria below.  The high-performance windows, described in Our Products section, offer better comfort levels, less condensation problems and lower sound transmission.

When selecting a window company, ask the salesperson the following questions about their products.

ü       Does the window have UV inhibitors in the plastic for durability in the vinyl frame?

ü       Do the vinyl profiles have a smooth, high-gloss finish?

ü       How are the insulated units designed?  Are they engineered in such a way that there will be few insulated unit failures?

ü       Are the corners of both the frame and sash fusion welded?

ü       Is durability designed with double walls or internal screw bosses for mounting hardware?

ü       Does the glass have adequate insulating air space, thermally improved spacers, a low-e coating and other features that improve performance?

ü       Can the sash be tilted in and lifted out for easy cleaning?

ü       Have the frame and sash material been tested for colour stability and impact resistance?

ü       Are test reports available to validate the window’s resistance to wind, air and water leakage?

5.     Warranty

ü       Does the window come with a good warranty?

ü       What are the conditions, limitations and exclusions from coverage under the warranty?

ü       What is the warranty on labour?
